The Cumberland Hotel in Bournemouth, Dorset.
The brief:
The Cumberland Hotel is one of the finest art deco hotels in the country and is positioned on Bournemouth’s East Cliff overlooking miles of golden sandy beaches. As one of Europe’s only remaining purpose built art deco hotels, the management team wanted to introduce a continental-style alfresco dining facility for its clientele as part of a £2.5 million refurbishment programme.
The Broadview solution:
Following consultation with The Cumberland, Broadview established that the installation of a series of innovative awning systems, consisting of one large terrace framed awning and four folding arm electric awnings, would create the ultimate outdoor dining facility.
This hotel boasts the largest outdoor swimming pool in Bournemouth and Broadview has designed and installed a bespoke 11 metre by 5 metre Sunrain terrace framed awning system and four 4.5 metre by 3 metre folding arm B28 electric awnings, which have been positioned over the patio area overlooking the pool.
Built with a robust aluminium powder-coated framework, the Broadview Sunrain awning is fully retractable and easily activated by the latest remote control technology to ensure user-friendliness. The wireless remote control is delivered using Radio Technology Somfy (RTS), which has a radio transmission range of 200 metres in an open space or 20 metres through two concrete walls. The remote stops the awning at any position up to its full projection. The B28 awnings are also made of corrosion resistant aluminium and fully retract to fit flush against the hotel wall. The fabrics used are durable, strong and virtually maintenance free, giving years of service and are guaranteed not to fade or rot.
Following the initial consultation, the bespoke awnings were manufactured, delivered and installed within six weeks.
The result:
The Cumberland is now utilising its outside space to maximum effect. The awnings create an extensive undercover facility for up to 200 customers to dine and enjoy a drink as well as providing a comfortable outdoor smoking area, enabling the hotel to be fully prepared for the smoking ban.
